The drivers' championship was won by Alessandro Polita on Suzuki GSXR1000 K6 Team Celani Suzuki Italy. His main rivals throughout the season were Claudio Corti with the R1 Yamaha Team Italy and the two pilots of the MV Agusta, Scassa and Badovini. To highlight how the four Italian riders were split every pole and all the victories in the season with the exception of the first pole in Valencia.
Victory for Suzuki in the constructors, who manages to place his bike to nine times between the first two places in the ten races on the calendar. The MV Agusta, second in the ranking, thanks to the victory of Badovini in the proof of Czech Republic on the Brno circuit, returns to success in a motorcycle racing world at the distance of 30 years from the last victory of Giacomo Agostini in 1976 at the Grand Prix of West Germany
